Finsec President’s Christmas message

There’s no doubt that 2010 has been a hard year for New Zealand workers. There have been natural disasters, a devastating tragic work place accident – and an unnatural disaster, in the form of prolonged government attacks on our rights at work. In a time when all of us are worried about job security and what’s around the corner, insecurity is going to become the norm for workers starting new jobs with unfair 90 day trials.

For Finsec members, we have continued to see a seemingly never-ending round of restructuring and a continued chipping away at staffing numbers.

However, we continue to stick together in our union and work together to protect our conditions – and achieve pay increases much better than workers who aren’t part of unions. At the end of the year, it’s important to acknowledge those successes and celebrate them. Being union works, and we’ve proved it again this year.

There’s no doubt that we’ll face new challenges in 2011, but through being Finsec we support each other and each member is strengthened by our 5,500 colleagues.

Thanks to all members, delegates, Union Councillors and staff for all the contributions you have made to our union this year. I have enjoyed working with you and look forward to continue to do so in 2011.

Enjoy your holidays, and the time you spend with friends and family. All the best for a safe and happy Christmas season.

Kelvin Pycroft, Finsec President
