Unions resolve to support mine inquiries

The national body of New Zealand Unions paid tribute to the 29 Pike River miners at its National Affiliates Council (NAC) meeting in Wellington this week. The NAC consists of representatives from the CTU’s 40 affiliate unions, including Finsec, representing 350,000 workers in New Zealand.

The NAC passed a resolution stating:

That following the announcement yesterday that no one has survived the explosions at Pike River Mine, the CTU including its staff and affiliated unions send their deepest sympathy to the families, friends, community and fellow workers of those men killed in the accident.

That we also thank and acknowledge the strenuous efforts of the emergency rescue teams, coordinators and those supporting the miners and their families.

That we send our solidarity and support to the members, officials and staff of the EPMU and pledge any help it needs during this time.

That the Commission of Inquiry into this workplace accident is on terms and in a form agreed with the Union and the community.

That we express our despair at the continued high level of workplace injury and death in this country, and vow to continue fighting for improved health and safety practice in New Zealand workplaces.

We join with the whole of the country in expressing our sorrow for all those affected by this tragedy.

The CTU also resolved to make an immediate donation to the EPMU’s support fund for the Pike River Mine workers. Information about the support fund will be distributed to Finsec members next week.

The banks are offering support  to staff affected by the disaster. Finsec will also be following up with our members in the region to ensure they have access to all the support they need.
