The banks have been receiving praise for their handling of employment issues in the wake of the Canterbury earthquake. Staff have been offered additional days of paid leave, accommodation and supplies, counselling and access to emergency funding.

Finsec Campaigns Director Andrew Campbell told the media it is a model to other companies in a similar position in terms of the support they can offer their staff. “It was critical that those larger employers, particularly the banks who drive a lot of the economic machinery, are playing a really proactive role,” said Campbell.
