Earthquake response for workers

The last week has been enormously difficult for everyone in the Canterbury region due to the devastating earthquake last Saturday, and our thoughts are with Finsec members and their families as they continue to deal with aftershocks and face the challenge of the clean up.

Unions have been rising to the task of ensuring that workers receive the leave they need and continue to be paid while children are off school and workplaces are made safe.  From what we’ve seen, all the banks have really stepped up with the support offered to staff and also to customers – however, issues are likely to arise so anyone affected should call 0800 FINSEC for advice.

Government has announced a support subsidy for businesses with fewer than 20 staff, including a $350 per week wage subsidy. To access support, call the Ministry of Social Development on 0800 550 009 or Victim Support on 0800 842 826. Information from various sources is also available on
