Victory for union members at Westpac Collections

Finsec has won its case in the Employment Court to have the $1000 relocation allowance (won in Collective Agreement negotiations in 2008), paid out to eligible union members at Westpac Collections.
Westpac argued that it never intended for the allowance to be paid to Collections staff, while Finsec’s view is that it was agreed to in bargaining, and that the wording of the Terms of Settlement reflected that.
The Employment Court judge supported Finsec’s position, stating that: “On the clear and unambiguous terms of the collective agreement and prior documents, those employees formerly employed at the Albert Street site and who have further to travel to work as a result of the change of location, are entitled to the travel allowance.”
This is a great result for Finsec members at Collections, although it could still be appealed. Well done to all the members who have stuck at it over two years and won! It shows the power of working together through the union.
