Working peoples’ week

This week was workers week with Worker’s Memorial Day on Wednesday and May Day tomorrow.

International Workers Memorial Day is a day to remember the more than two million workers around the world who die each year as a result of work-related accidents and diseases.

May Day, or International Workers Day is on May 1 and a variety of events are planned over the weekend.

Next week, there is an opportunity to increase our rights at work when Labour MP Darien Fenton’s Redundancy Protection Bill has its first reading in parliament.

While most Finsec members have redundancy protection in our collective agreements, it is estimated that around 80% of New Zealand workers do not. That means if they lose their job they could get no redundancy pay – regardless of how long they have worked for their employer.

For more information on Dairen’s Bill, go to http://www.hardtimes.org.nz  – or email John Key asking National to support the bill at john.key@parliament.govt.nz
