A fairer economy

Labour MP Carol Beaumont addressed the Finsec conference, and acknowledged the work Finsec members had done not only for finance sector staff, but for the community and customers. She went on to talk about the work that Labour is doing on what a fairer economy might look like, as compared to the policies of the National Government that are widening the gap between rich and poor (such as the upcoming rise to GST).

Carol quoted from a Salvation Army state of the nation report called A Road to Recovery that an economic recovery should not be seen as the answer to our prayers: “An economic recovery where Australian-owned banks recover their profitability and where agribusinesses maintain their international competitiveness may have little, if anything, to offer struggling Kiwi families. A recovery where there are high house prices and no new jobs is of little social value.”
