Red bag day should be red letter day

Yesterday, the campaign to close the gap between what men and women get paid took another step forward – with accessories.
The NZ Federation of Business and Professional Woman (BPWNZ) co-ordinated a national “red bag” day to highlight the gender pay gap.
In Wellington, members of the pay equity coalition (including Finsec) marked the day with a Red Bag Walking Bus, ending at Parliament.
BPWNZ spokesperson Angela McLeod said that in the current economic environment, women need a sound financial base to survive, pay the bills and look after their families. “In New Zealand there is a 12% gender pay gap per hour, but in some workplaces the pay gap is as great as 35%.The gender pay gap is cutting family incomes, pensions, investments and tax revenue and reducing productivity.”
