Finsec President’s Christmas Message

Taking time to reflect on 2009, the outcomes achieved this year for and by members in the current difficult climate is something that you should all be proud off.

Pay increases negotiated through collective bargaining were well ahead of the majority in the private and public sectors.

The public campaign earlier in the year around job security and keeping jobs in New Zealand resulted in 10,000 signatures being collected in public petitions, and was a fantastic effort. I have no doubt that the publicity generated caused the major banks to seriously review their positions. Westpac committed to keeping jobs in New Zealand and ANZ/National agreeing to a $10 million retraining/hardship fund for those staff affected by the off shoring off jobs to India was a significant result that came from a joint approach from Finsec and the Finance Sector Union in Australia.

Your activity as Finsec members clearly contributed to these outcomes and many more. Thank you to all members for your support and activity throughout the year on the various issues and collective bargaining. There has also been good levels of recruitment this year, with members stepping up to talk to new staff and non members about the need to work collectively. For those of you that have recruited new members to our union over the last year, your efforts are truly appreciated. Recruitment of new members is always a key focus and will be again in 2010.

To delegates, WOC committees, Union Councillors and Executive Committee, your extra individual commitment to support and promote ‘Union’ is acknowledged. Many of you regularly sacrifice your own time to assist with union activity. Without this, we know many of the achievements over this year would not have occurred.

2010 is already shaping up as another busy year, with Westpac continuing to roll out the new branch structure and ANZ/National looking at performance pay.

In the meantime, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. I look forward to your continued support in 2010 and thank you once again for your efforts throughout 2009.

Kelvin Pycroft, Finsec President
