Newest fan of Better Banks (and unions) – Pope Benedict

Pope Benedict XVI recently joined calls for a fairer more ethical financial system in a document called “Charity in Truth.”

He called for a new world financial order guided by ethics and the search for the common good, and denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality that led to the global financial meltdown.

Benedict also saw a central role for unions in fairer economics. He said that the drive to outsource work to the cheapest bidder had endangered workers, and he demanded that workers be allowed to organise in unions to protect their rights and guarantee steady, decent employment.

The Pope’s vision is for a profoundly new way of understanding business enterprise, that respects the dignity of workers and prioritises ethics and social responsibility over dividend returns.
