Election Gossip: Enrol to vote – and questioning tax cuts

On the election soapbox this week is Chair of the ANZ National Union Council, Cathie Lendrum from Christchurch. Cathie has never missed voting in an election, and top of her agenda is making sure that everyone gets on the electoral roll and votes! As the deadline for an EasyVote card is 8 October, so click on the link below to make sure your are on the roll http://www.elections.org.nz/enrolment/how-to-enrol/how-to-enrol-to-vote.html

With tax cuts already in place from 1 October, Cathie is wary of further tax cuts and the social cost of cutting taxes. “People I’m talking to say that when it comes to tax cuts, they’d rather make sure that their kids can get an operation if they need it. Thinking people understand the implication of big tax cuts.”

“The reality is that tax cuts have to come from somewhere, and big tax cuts mean less money is available for public spending. The idea of going into debt to fund infrastructure in the current economic environment is just crazy.”

Cathie also suggested, in the nicest possible way of course, that people who think a money trader is going to lead a worker-friendly government have “another thing coming!”
