CTU Fairness@Work Plays of the Week

Election announced
– November 8th The election date was announced last Friday – we will go to the polls on Saturday November 8th. The last 20 years has seen considerable changes in New Zealand politics and we know that governments can make a big difference to our working lives. This election unions will be closely analysing what each party’s policies will mean for workers and their families.
What’s at stake in ’08? And quick off the mark, unionists all around New Zealand took to the streets in a national day of action today, letting workers and the public know what’s at stake in 08. The last 9 years have seen real improvements in workers’ rights such as fairer employment law, more holidays, increases in minimum wages, paid parental leave and KiwiSaver, and the leaflet warned people about putting this all at risk with a change of government. Check out the facts for workers at http://www.fairnessatwork.org.nz.
Did you know? Did you know – that you cannot vote on Election Day unless you have enrolled beforehand?  Many of us are enrolled, but there are still 250,000 Kiwi voters who haven’t enrolled.  October 8 is the final day people can enroll if they want to cast a normal vote – if you enroll after that date, you’ll have to cast a special vote, which will take you longer on election day.  And remember – if you turn up on polling day without having enrolled, your vote won’t count.  So make sure you enroll!
