Stop the takeover of St George by Westpac

Kelvin Evans, a St George Bank delegate from Finsec’s sister union the FSU in Australia, is asking Finsec members to help stop the attempted takeover of their “beloved” St George Bank by Westpac.

“We believe this takeover will be no good for the economy, will reduce competition and will definitely result in job losses,” said Kelvin. “If this takeover occurs we are looking at approximately 5000 job loses across both banks, primarily from back office positions and the call centres.”

Evans says the FSU is calling on all Finsec & FSU members to influence Federal Treasurer Wayne Swann to step in to stop the merger (a move he can make) by signing a petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-st-george-banksa/sign.html. Swann has advised unions that he will be swayed by the best argument, and the FSU is seeking at least 5000 signatures, one for each job at risk. Support our union colleagues in Australia by signing the petition today.
