High price of trade unionism in Colombia

An international campaign on 8 April marked the one month anniversary of the murder of Leonidas Gomez Rozo, leader of the National Union of Bank Workers of Colombia.

Leonidas was employed by Citibank and is one of over 2,500 trade unionists who have been murdered in the last twenty years in Colombia. The Colombian Government response to the victimization and intimidation of trade unionists has been inadequate.

The UNI Global Union, which Finsec is a member of, is co-ordinating a campaign to pressure the Colombian Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of Leonidas and to take immediate steps to stop repression into the country. Finsec has faxed the Colombian Embassy in Australia to this effect, and will also communicate with the New Zealand Government about the issue.
