CTU President issues election challenge for Finsec members

Council of Trade Unions President Helen Kelly addressed the Finsec Conference, and focused on how union members could engage with the upcoming government election.

Helen Kelly said that union members had an important role in ensuring that all eligible workers enrol to vote. She also said it was up to unions to make sure that voters see issues through the eyes of working people and how party policies will affect their rights at work.

Kelly said that there was still a lot of uncertainty about National Party industrial relations policies, and that more would be revealed as election year unfolds. However, she said that National had already committed to repealing the 2004 amendments to the Employment Relations Act (relating to collective bargaining and protecting workers from contracting out) and to pushing through Wayne Mapp’s failed bill stripping workers of their rights for the first 90 days of employment.

Helen Kelly likened the impact of National’s proposal to be able to fire without reason for the first three months to telling new drivers that for the first three months with their license they could run over whoever they liked!
