Massive Participation in Finsec Campaigns

Finsec members can go into the silly season celebrating record levels of participation in recent campaigns on pay systems and staffing levels. Campaigns Director Andrew Campbell says that the high numbers of returns from the last two activities show that the union is in good heart to gain significant achievements for members in 2008.

Nearly 1500 postcards were returned by Westpac staff calling for improvements to the new pay system, which is equivalent to nearly 90% of Westpac members in the bank. “We have a very strong mandate from members to seek the key improvements they’re after to the proposed new pay system,” said Andrew Campbell.

The survey on staffing levels has attracted a response from staff at ANZ National and BNZ equal to well over 50% of Finsec members at those banks. Statistically, this gives Finsec a very broad view of the issues for these groups of staff. Response rates of 30% are considered average for written surveys of this kind.

Campbell said that the survey response would be invaluable for the union, and that the banks must take the results very seriously. “Political careers are made or broken on polls of only a thousand people. Only forty one percent of those eligible voted in the local body elections. The high level of participation in this survey demonstrates that staffing levels are a huge issue for bank staff.”

The results of the survey are being collated and will be released early next year.
