ANZ Group promises an end to weekends

Gladstone ChurchANZ Group announced this week a seven point business plan with the aim being to become Australia’s “most convenient bank” by 2010.  Of particular interest to Finsec members here will be the commitment to offer seven-day-a-week full service banking.

Finsec’s long standing position has been that banks are entitled to be open for business whatever hours they want.  However, it also believes that weekends are an important part of New Zealand’s culture, and should be protected for bank workers.  Weekends are the time workers get to spend with our kids, and family. It’s when we can play sports, have a barbeque with friends, and go to church. Saturday and Sunday are important to workers, to their families, and to their communities.  If workers give up this important family and community time they should be compensated.

Australian workers in ANZ earn either time and a half or double time for weekend work and also receive extra payments for working in the evening. But many ANZ National workers in New Zealand lost this right to compensation 2 years ago, which makes them especially vulnerable to seven day a week trading.
