Finsec President calls for Flexible Working Hours

Sue Boraston, Finsec PresidentLast week Finsec President, Sue Boraston, wrote to every Member of Parliament asking them to support legislation for the right to request flexible working arrangements.  The Bill, which is before Parliament for consideration at the moment, would give employees with young children or dependents the legislative right to request flexible working hours and have that request considered fairly.  In her letter Sue Boraston noted:

“It is becoming clear that our culture of long work hours has a high social cost, and is impacting heavily on families, parenting, children and people’s health. The 2002 New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Thirty Families Project concludes that work hours are a major issue with huge implications for individual workers, their families, and their communities. For many workers, the hours were simply too long, For other workers, it is the unpredictability of their working hours, both the length and distribution, which causes them the greatest concern, and the greatest intrusion into other aspects of their lives.

Finsec supports a legislative solution to this problem. We believe that legislative reform is necessary if the country is serious about achieving working environments where meeting such requests is a priority.”
