No, Project Unity is not Bob Geldof’s latest feel good concert tour. It’s Westpac’s restructuring proposal which will see many back office sites merged into one site in central Auckland. Sites affected by Project Unity will be Gloucester Park, Phone Assist Auckland, Business Direct, Collections, Hamilton LSC, and Phone Assist Wellington. Project Unity will have consequences for all those people whose job was in one building, and now is in another, possibly in a different part of the city or even a different city all together. The issues they face could include finding alternative work, commuting distance, travel time, transport options, parking, and the facilities at the new building.
Even though staff will not be moved to the new building until 2009, many of the decisions about Project Unity are being made now. To ensure that staff have a say and are treated fairly, members need to be organising themselves now and raising issues that are important to them.
Finsec is establishing a Project Unity Organising Committee. This committee of Finsec members will organise members efforts to be heard. It will also represent members in any dealings with the bank.
