Westpac plans to restructure its branches

Restructured fishWestpac has just announced plans to change the structure of a selected number of branches. These changes include replacing the Customer Support (CS) role with two new roles – the Customer Support Officer role (CSO) and the Customer Consultant 1 role (CC1).

The Finsec Union Council is doing two things about this change.  Firstly it is coordinating feedback from all members about the proposed changes. It will be presenting this information to the bank and try and resolve any issues of concern.

Secondly Finsec staff will be talking to staff in the affected branches about the proposed changes to help deal with the issues that arise.

These branch structure changes have been piloted across eleven branches since late last year. As with any restructuring change staff have some clear rights to be consulted about the proposed changes, and to be treated fairly during any process of change.

Finsec believes that under our collective employment agreement, the CSO and CC1 roles are not comparable with the CS role because the roles are graded differently. This means that while some CSs may be happy to become a CSO or CC1, CSs cannot be forced to make this change. CSs who do not want to change to the CSO or CC1 role have to either be offered a comparable role (most likely a CS role in a nearby branch) or offered redundancy compensation. We have communicated this to the bank and will work with them to minimise redundancy situations whilst ensuring that the right of CS’s to choose is protected.
