Community protests proposed Westpac branch closure

Around 50 Dunedin North residents held a picket outside the Westpac Gardens branch last Tuesday opposing the banks proposal to close the branch. Local businesses and residents are campaigning to save the branch, the only remaining major bank with a branch still in North Dunedin.

Residents have organized a petition that has over 1000 signatures on it and is organsing a community meeting which the bank has been invited to attend to respond to community opposition to the proposal.

Local resident Heather Walker, who was on the picket line, says to the bank “You might be the big people, but I suggest you stop right now and listen and think of us little people. We have trust in our bank staff because each and every one of us is known to them”.

Finsec Campaigns Director Andrew Campbell has been working with Finsec members and the community on the campaign. “The community feeling on this issue is amazing. All sectors of the community are involved – local business people, people from the voluntary sector, students, and pensioners. They are uniform in their strong support for the service provided by the branch and its staff. It is important that we all send a very strong message to all banks that we simply will not support this branch being closed”.
