Chair of Westpac’s Board of Directors, Leon Davis, is quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday telling shareholders the bank would shift jobs overseas if the move proved to be in the company’s best interests.
“The board believes that if Westpac is to remain competitive, offshoring requires thoughtful consideration and evaluation,” he said.
“Where offshoring proves to be in the long-term interests of our company, then we will take this step.”
However, he assured shareholders that Westpac’s Australian and New Zealand call centres were safe, saying that only staff based in Australia would speak to customers.
Meanwhile Mr Charles Goode, chair of ANZ Bank’s Board of Directors, is quoted in the Daily Telegraph on Friday saying ANZ was committed to keeping its call centres in Australia.
“We understand that our Australian customers prefer to deal with someone at a call centre in Australia and we have committed to maintain all our customer call centres here,” he said.
Now, admittedly both of these statements were to Australian audiences, but it doesn’t make you feel much safer, does it?
